About Me – Angela Winterton

Before you commence any type of therapy, it is important that you trust and are comfortable with your therapist and I therefore am happy to tell you a little bit more about myself.

I am a qualified, registered and insured professional therapist, offering Clinical Hypnotherapy, Psychotherapy, Counselling, Stress Management and EMDR at my clinics in Hay on Wye, Brecon, Kington, Leominster and Llandrindod Wells.

I have always had a fascination and interest in psychology and sociology but my life had been mapped out for me in a way that would not easily accommodate this interest.  I was born and raised in the beautiful Austrian Alps where tourism and gastronomy provided the major income. My grandfather was a pioneer in tourism of his time and established a thriving hotel, and my parents ran a Mountain Restaurant.  It went without saying that I was to follow in my family’s footsteps.  But life took a major ‘detour’ when I met and married my English husband and we moved to the UK in 1988.  I started my career using my German language knowledge and became a translator, interpreter and private tutor as this fitted in well around my family commitments. Moving to another country and bringing up my two boys was not always easy and I understand from first-hand about difficulties one can experience in life. I had to learn new skills, find my way around a different culture, master a new language and as a result found flexibility and resilience within me I did not know I had. Like many families, we encountered adversities, overcame illness and experienced the loss of loved ones. At times of difficulty, I seem to come into my own and try my best to be understanding and supportive.  I suppose, being a wife, mum and friend, can at times, feel as if you are an ‘unpaid’ counsellor and mediator.

My interest in Hypnotherapy first began when I needed professional help to overcome a phobia. Yes, I was scared, no – petrified, of spiders. I had always been frightened of spiders, a fact that was not helped in any way by my ‘kind’ three elder brothers and two sons. I am glad to say that after seeing a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I am ‘free’ from my fear of spiders – in case any of my brothers or sons read this, don’t bother trying to scare me….

When my youngest son started High School, it felt like the right time for me to look into the possibilities available to act upon my lifelong dreams and ambitions. When the opportunity arose for me to enrol onto a three year Counselling, Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy diploma course, I grabbed it with both hands.   I soon found out that being a ‘mature’ student was not always that easy, especially when trying to juggle life’s daily demands. After what seemed like an eternity, I qualified with distinction as a Clinical Hypnotherapy, Counsellor and Psychotherapist.  I set up ‘Aspired Therapies’ and started work in private practice in Herefordshire and Mid Wales.  My interest in psychology has steadily grown over the years and I have consequently qualified as a Stress Manager, EMDR therapist, Advanced Weight Management therapist and Stop Smoking therapist.  I am currently studying a diploma course in Child and Adolescence counselling.  As well as being a therapist, I am also a foster carer which can be challenging, demanding and at the same time rewarding.

I am a member of The National Hypnotherapy Society, The National Counselling Society, CNHC (Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council), GHR (General Hypnotherapy Register), GHSC (General Hypnotherapy Standards Council) and a founder member of the Mid Wales Guild of Holistic Therapists.

When I am not studying or working, I love spending time with my family and friends. I am a bit of an ‘outdoor’ girl and I like to  potter in the garden, travel  to far flung places, go for very long walks in the Welsh hills or ski down a mountain back ‘home’ in Austria.  I am also a bit of an adrenalin ‘junkie’ – I once did a sponsored ‘wing-walk’, strapped to the top wing of a biplane with the ‘Utterly Butterly Aerobatic Team’. More recently, I have taken on competing in ‘Ultra Challenges’, (walking, jogging or crawling 100km non-stop) raising money for charity. Another passion in life are my animals; currently we have a gorgeous Maine Coon cat, a loopy Labradoodle and countless chickens and some fish.

I know that I have travelled a long way along the path of personal growth and change and my early limitations and expectations did not hold me back.  Through perseverance and determination, I found that anything is possible and I have managed to achieve my life’s desire. I am confident that my own experiences are invaluable when trying to assist my clients to overcome difficulties and to achieve their heart felt desires.
